Wayne County students selected for Governor's School

Five rising seniors from Wayne County Public Schools will be attending Governor's School sessions this summer.
The oldest statewide summer residential program is for academically/intellectually gifted high school students in the country.
There are two locations for the programs -- Governor's School West, established in 1963 at Salem College in Winston-Salem, and Governor's School East, established in 1978 and located at Meredith College in Raleigh. The 2008 session will run from June 15 through July 26.
Attending Governor's School East will be Capen Rhew from Charles B. Aycock High, studying natural science; Sarah Urdzik of Eastern Wayne High, studying mathematics; Wesley Graham of Southern Wayne High, studying natural science; and Sterling Price of Spring Creek High, studying social science.
Sarah Ricker of Eastern Wayne High will be attending Governor's School West.
Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of schools, commended the students, who were recognized at Monday night's school board meeting.
"Acceptance into Governor's School is a high honor for students," he said. "The students accepted into this program are some of the brightest in our district. While attending Governor's School, they will have a wonderful opportunity to further cultivate their talents and abilities."
