Wayne County Sheriff's Office investigators say they are not sure whether they will file charges against the man they say shot and killed Shelton Douglas Southerland Jr., 31, on Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Glenn Price Jr., 30, was named by deputies as the alleged shooter.

But they don't know if they will file charges against him, Capt. Tom Effler said. He said the investigation is continuing but if nothing new is discovered, the Sheriff's Office might turn all the details over to District Attorney Branny Vickory's office for a decision.

Effler said that under that scenario, Vickory and his assistant district attorneys would decide whether to file charges in the shooting.

"We do know who the shooter is, and we're still investigating it," the Sheriff's Office captain said. "It was ... a disagreement."

Southerland was the neighbor of the man who allegedly shot him on Billy Price Road, after he allegedly entered the shooter's home, Effler said.

"You can't really say that he forced his way into the house -- he went into the house, and after that, the shooting occurred," Effler said.

Southerland, who goes by Doug because he shares his father's name, was found with one gunshot wound at 430 Billy Price Road.

According to 9-1-1 communications records, at least two households, including the address where the shooting took place, made emergency calls.

Records show at least one ambulance was dispatched, and Effler said that Southerland was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Doctors pronounced Southerland dead at the hospital.

Effler said the gun was a handgun, but did not want to elaborate more about the weapon, he said.

"We are still investigating it, and when we're done, we will probably hand it over to the district attorney," the captain said.
