Goldsboro Police in torch run
Lawmen from both the Goldsboro Police Department and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will participate Tuesday in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, according to a news release. Officers will meet at the Goldsboro Police Department at 7:45 a.m. that day for a brief ceremony. Then they will carry the torch for a 14-mile run through Goldsboro and the air force base, finishing back at the police department around noon, according to the release. On the local level, corporate sponsorships, T-shirt and hat donations can be made to Sgt. Theresa Chiero or Capt. Mike Conerly of the Goldsboro police. Donation checks can be made payable to Special Olympics. Checks can be mailed to the Goldsboro Police Department, P.O. Drawer A, Goldsboro, 27530. You can also call the department at (919) 580-4236. Donations may also be made electronically at www.sonc.net, according to the release.
Copper thief caught at scrapyard
Fateh Yafai of Madison Meat Market reported Wednesday that $240 worth of 2-inch copper pipe -- about 20 feet -- was taken. Police received a tip that the man who stole the pipe was a white male with no fingers on his right hand, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. Police reports show the suspect fled west on a white moped toward Holly Street from the North Madison Avenue meat market, police said. But police say they found John William Jones, 49, Kearney Lane, a short time later at Goldsboro Iron and Metal, where he was arrested and his moped was towed. Police said Jones was charged with misdemeanor larceny and jailed under $1,000 bond.
Rental house gutted for copper
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base employee Frank Gamble of Willowbrook Drive reported that he was checking on a vacant residence he owns in the 400 block of Park Avenue. Gamble reported $800 worth of copper piping was stolen from beneath the home.
