Pecan Road bridge work to start soon

State officials awarded a $1.1 million contract to replace a bridge on Pecan Road as part of the road improvement projects approved by the state De-partment of Transportation.
Projects in Wayne, Duplin and Sampson counties were among those approved by the board. Contracts totaling $58.3 million were awarded.
The board awarded the million contract to replace a bridge on Pecan Road over Caraway Creek to United Contractors of Johnston, Iowa. Work will start this month, with a target completion date of Dec. 31. The project includes replacing the current bridge and resurfacing approaches on Pecan Road.
The bridge will be closed to traffic and a detour will be in place. Motorists traveling east on Pecan Road will turn right onto Genoa Road, then left onto Outlaw Road, left onto Emmaus Church Road and left onto Mitchell Road back to Pecan Road. Westbound motorists will turn left onto Mitchell Road, right on Emmaus Church Road, right on Outlaw Road and right on Genoa Road back to Pecan Road.
The board also approved contracts for resurfacing 28.3 miles of highway in Duplin and Sampson counties. That project includes the N.C. 24/Kenansville Bypass in Duplin County from N.C. 24 Business east of Kenansville to the I-40 ramps and U.S. 421 from the Pender County line to where it becomes a divided highway in Sampson County.
Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 12, with completion set for Nov. 21.
