WCC holding graduation ceremonies today, Friday

Wayne Community College officials estimate there will be 455 curriculum graduates and 355 basic skills graduates this year, 105 from the adult high school and 230 receiving General Educational Development, or GED, certificates.
Two graduation ceremonies will be held this week -- tonight for adult high school and GED students and Friday night for candidates in the college curriculum programs.
Tonight's will be at 6:30 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium.
Friday's is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. outside on Graduation Field at the college.
In case of inclement weather, Friday's event will be moved to First Assembly of God and will start at 7 p.m. For indoors events, only ticketed guests will be admitted.
Speakers for each graduation also have been announced.
Graduating adult high school student Toneiko Holloway will be on tonight's program. The single mother of two children, she returned to school in August, where she has worked diligently to complete her high school diploma, said Sonja Redmon, basic skills program director.
"She has battled through taking care of her two children, caring for her sick mother and illnesses of her own this year," Ms. Redmon said. "Upon graduation Toneiko would like to attend Wayne Community and work toward a career as a juvenile probation officer."
Hilda Pinnix-Ragland, state board of community colleges chair and Progress Energy Northern Region vice president, will speak during the curriculum graduation.
The George E. Wilson Excellence in Teaching Award will also be presented during the curriculum commencement. This recognition, provided by the Foundation of Wayne Community College for the 23rd year, is presented annually to an instructor who exhibits"unselfish devotion and significant contributions to student success.
