Your Votes - Lois Mooring wins Register of Deeds

With no opposition lined up to face her in the fall, Wayne County Register of Deeds Lois Mooring will likely cruise to a second term in office after soundly defeating challenger Constance Coram in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
The race, which pitted the incumbent register against a former office employee, ended with Mrs. Mooring taking almost twice as many votes as her challenger — 10,392 (63.9 percent) to 5,872 (36.10 percent).
All smiles as she watched the returns roll in with her friends and family at the Lantern Inn, Mrs. Mooring said she was pleased with the results.
“This victory is so sweet in a personal way,” she said, declining to make any further comment other than just to thank her supporters.
Her plan now, she added, is to just continue working to improve the office — streamlining processes and cross-training employees — to provide better customer service.
For Ms. Coram, though, the defeat was a little harder to accept.
“I definitely plan to run again in the next four years. I really don’t think my opponent beat me. I just think that because I didn’t have a fair chance. ... I still say the Register of Deeds (office) is in deep trouble,” she said. “I do believe the Register of Deeds is the heart of the county and needs someone who is concerned, not about a title — I dont care about a title — but about the community. I am still committed to Wayne County and the needs of Wayne County.”
The Wayne County Register of Deeds oversees nine employees as they catalogue birth and death certificates, issue and catalogue marriage certificates, administer oaths and monitor renewal statuses for notaries, and record and index military discharges, real estate transactions, powers of attorneys, leases and separation agreements. They also are responsible for helping residents and others access and copy those documents.
