Postal Service food drive Saturday

Local Postal Service letter carriers and rural carriers, in partnership with United Way of Wayne County will be conducting a food drive on Saturday. The local drive is part of a national effort by more than 1,300 NALC branches in the United States to help fill local food banks.

The local letter carriers' goal is to collect 18,000 pounds of non-perishable food to benefit seven local charities and food banks in Wayne County. City Mission of Goldsboro, Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, Community Crisis Center, The Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Shelter, and United Church Ministries will be receiving the non-perishable food that is collected in Wayne County.

Volunteers from participating agencies, area churches, the Goldsboro Target Store and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will join carriers in sorting, loading and distributing the food. Security-Atlas Storage and City Mission are lending trucks to help withstorage and distribution .

The drive will cover residents with a Goldsboro ZIP code, including 27530 through 27534. Postal customers wishing to donate items may place them by their mailbox on the morning of the food drive or take their donation to either the Berkeley Station Post Office or the Downtown Post Office through May 12 and place it in the hamper found in the lobby.

Only non-glass containers are accepted and expiration dates should be checked.
