Wayne 4-H team second in state

Wayne County 4-H's senior team came in second in the annual state Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program competition.
It was held April 19 at Carolina Beach State Park in New Hanover County.
Sixty youths representing eight counties from across the state competed. They represented Alamance, Alexander, Alleghany, Brunswick, Guilford, Henderson, Union and Wayne counties.
Wayne County's senior team consisted of Laura Bos, Kayla Hill, Curtis Bos, Alec Linton, Marisa Linton, Luke Hill and Justin Spears.
Placing fourth in individual competition was Marisa Linton.
Wayne County's junior team placed ninth.
Highlights for the teams included spending time at the beach, surf fishing, camping and seeing carnivorous plants such as the Venus fly trap, pitcher plant and sundew.
WHEP is a 4-H program that teaches youths about wildlife and the management of their habitats. It's sponsored nationally by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and International Paper.
It's sponsored in North Carolina by North Carolina State University's Extension Forestry Program, the North Carolina State Council of Quail Unlimited and several Quail Unlimited chapters.
The top scoring team, which was from Henderson County, will represent the state at the national WHEP Invitational in Stillwater, Okla.
