Mary Ella Spengler, left, Madison Eddy and Alanna Price, third-grade students at Spring Creek Elementary School, react after placing their hands in a cooler of ice cold water during a Water Safety Day event Monday at Herman Park Center. The event, a joint effort between the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Department, featured more than a dozen stations to help teach local second- and third-grade students the importance of water safety. Students learned how to use a life jacket, check the water level before diving in head first, CPR techniques and how the body reacts in cold water. There was also a hands-on display of nature presented by a representative from the Cliffs of the Neuse.
