The Wayne County Sheriff's Office charged a Goldsboro man with shooting a sign outside Northwest Elementary School.
The Pikeville-Princeton Road School was letting out classes around 4 p.m. Wednesday when shots were reportedly fired, Capt. Tom Effler said.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene, where they collected a description of the vehicle, the captain said.
While deputies were still at the school, the car returned, and two men were detained.
The driver said that his passenger and cousin, Joey Lee Stanley, 24, DuPont Circle, had fired at a sign.
Stanley is charged with going about armed to terrorize the public, Effler said.
Bond was not listed on the arrest report, the captain said.
"We want to emphasize the seriousness of this," Effler said. "Especially with some of the incidents that have been going on around the country."
