Goldsboro City Council members will have a lot on their plates and in their glasses Monday night as they are expected to discuss several food and beverage topics.

A public hearing will be held for a proposal for a downtown bar, and council members are expected to approve an ordinance allowing the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public property as well as an ordinance allowing the operation of sidewalk cafes.

Jeff Darwin is requesting a conditional use permit to use property on the northeast corner of East Walnut Street and North John Street as a "place of entertainment" with ABC permits. Darwin has submitted a plan for a tavern and deli to be located within a portion of the building. Hours of operation are proposed as Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

The council will also look into amending ordinances to allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public property only if a valid permit is obtained from the City Manager upon the filling out of a proper application.

Another ordinance allowing restaurants to serve food and alcohol on the sidewalk outside of the business, once an application is filled out and the permit to do so is authorized, is also expected to be discussed by the council. There will be specific requirements for location, signage and lighting of that area of the sidewalk. The application for the permit will ask for information consisting of personal data of the applicant, hours of operation of the establishment, a drawing or site plan showing the area to be utilized, insurance information, an indemnity statement, copies of health permits and licenses and a sworn statement as to whether the applicant has violated any laws with respect to alcohol during the past five years. There will also be a fee that the applicant must pay that will be decided upon by the council.

Three other public hearings will be held. The first will be on a rezoning request by The Potter's House to change property on the east side of Bryant Street between Atlantic Avenue and Holly Street from residential to office and institutional. A second hearing will be on a conditional use permit by Myco Supply Co. for property on the north side of West Ash Street between Alabama Avenue and the Southern Railroad to allow for the expansion of a facility for the storage of hazardous or chemical materials. The third will be held regarding a conditional use permit by Wooten Development Co. for property located on the west side of South George Street between Cola Drive and the Southern Railroad. The applicant requests the permit to allow for the owner to lease 3.37 acres of the site to Amerigas to operate a propane gas business, therefore allowing the storage of flammable liquids and gases.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
