Meadow Lane students raise money for custodians

Students at Meadow Lane Elementary School have spent the past three years working toward helping out the custodians who serve at their school each day.
Fourth graders at the school have held several fundraisers to purchase a golf cart for the two custodians. Among the projects have been an aluminum can collection, as well as such events as "Hat Day" and "Pajama Day."
When Goldsboro Iron & Metal heard about the effort, the business assisted with a metal recycling day, then made a donation of its own.
The students cumulatively raised $2,200, recently surprising custodians Tracy Lewis and Jerry Jackson with their gift.
Celia James, principal, said the golf cart is a very practical gift for the custodians, who frequently travel around the campus to ensure its safety and maintain the property.
"We are so proud of our students and very grateful to Goldsboro Iron and Metal who helped us make this project successful," she said.
Pat Perkins, a fourth grade teacher and organizer of the projects, also commended students for their participation.
"It was amazing to see how hard our students worked to help the custodians at our school," she said.
