Library promoting poetry

The Wayne County Public Library will host its first ever Poetry Walk on Friday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Participants will gather at the library and then walk through the surrounding neighborhoods, letting the sights and sounds and of the outdoors inspire them to write.
Everybody will be given a notebook and a pen and several writing prompts. There will be periodic breaks throughout the walk for everyone to spend writing.
A coffee and pastry party will be held in the library's Gertrude Weil Auditorium afterward.
Advance registration is required either at the library or by phone at 735-1824.
Saturday will be the library's Poetry in the Park event, from 2 until 4 p.m., in the Herman Park House.
Participants will have an opportunity to share their favorite poem. Light refreshments will be served.
Then, on April 26 from 6 until 9 p.m., the library will sponsor an Open Mic Night at the Starbucks on Berkley Boulevard for poetry reading.
The library also is holding an Excellence in Poetry Competition.
Middle school and high school students are asked to submit their best poem either by bringing it to the library's Reference Desk or e-mailing it to brandon.robbins@waynegov.com.
Two winners -- one from grades 5 through 8 and one from grades 9 through 12 -- will be selected and given prize packages in addition to having their works published on the Library website.
All entries must be original works and include the poet's name, age and grade level, school, and e-mail address and/or phone number. The deadline for entry is May 5. Winners will be announced and notified on May 12.
