Walnut Creek eyes 10-year plan

What will the Village of Walnut Creek will look like in 2018?
Planning board members and Village Council members will soon be looking into the development of a 10-year plan for the village, they said at their meeting Wednesday night.
But before they start to plan for the future, they want to hear what village residents have to say.
An open-ended type survey will soon be given out to every household in the village, so that each and every person that has a stake in Walnut Creek has a chance to put their thoughts into the development process.
The survey will include questions that pertain to almost every aspect of the current village as well as what it could be, including property values, real estate sales, security, the police department, village government, recreation areas and the country club.
Playground Committee Chairman and Planning Board member Craig Bowen offered a glimpse of what the future could hold to draw more families into the community. The proposal included a paved parking lot, bathrooms and a picnic shelter at the current playground facility as well as including more playground equipment.
A new recreational field was also proposed, including a soccer, baseball and football field with a picnic shelter, walking track and an area for kite flying.
A bicycle trail and nature walk were other suggestions of the Planning Board.
Estimated costs for the additions would be between $35,000 and $100,000 for playground equipment, $20,000 for bathrooms, between $15,000 and $30,000 for picnic shelters, $11,000 for a paved walking/jogging path, $5,000 for landscaping around the areas, $4,000 for a parking lot, $1,000 for signage, $500 each for benches and a soccer goal. A big plus for the council members was the cost of the nature trails -- free.
Bowen said he had also looked into some grants to help pay for the costs.
