MOUNT OLIVE -- A town woman died Monday night after being struck by a pickup truck on County Road, police said.

Sharon Carter, who was about 48 years old, was walking on County Road near the intersection of Nellie Avenue, Chief Ralph Schroeder said.

A GMC pickup driven by Russell Bradford Brock, 50, struck Ms. Carter while headed west on the highway, the chief said.

No charges have been filed. The investigation continues, police said.

Police are still tryin to find out why Ms. Carter, who lived in the apartment complex on County Road, was in the roadway around 8:30 p.m., authorities said.

"At this point, right now, that's still under investigation," the chief said. "The lady was walking in the roadway."

Wayne Emergency Medical Services personnel declared Ms. Carter dead at the scene, the chief said.

The medical examiner will decide whether an autopsy is necessary in the death.

Assisting Mount Olive police with the accident scene were the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the state Highway Patrol and Duplin County Sheriff's deputies.

The chief said the Highway Patrol assisted with the measuring required in investigating an accident.

Schroeder said his feelings went out to the relatives of the people involved in the accident.

"You hate it for the families involved," he said.
