MOUNT OLIVE -- Rosewood High School teacher Lindsay Barwick is the 2008 Young Careerist of the Year.

She received the honor this month during the Wayne-Duplin Business and Professional Women's meeting.

As the new Young Careerist of the Year, Ms. Barwick will represent the local club in district competition. If she wins at that level, she will proceed to state competition in June in Asheville. And if she wins the state title, she will continue to national competition in July at Atlanta.

Ms. Barwick is a marketing teacher at Rosewood. She stays on and has little time to slow down during the working day.

"When do I squeeze in some time for me? In the few minutes I take each day to check my e-mail, I also check the latest in fashion trends and the latest news," she said in her speech, which was part of the judging for the award. "This may seem trivial to some of you, but this is my daily routine. When I take time to surf the Internet and go to these sites, this is my down time. Although it might be between the change of classes and last only 2 to 5 minutes, I feel that I am keeping in touch with what is happening in the world outside my school walls."

Her speech counted 35 points out of 85 points included in a checklist the judges considered for the winner. The candidate with the highest score won.

Other candidates were Jacqueline Lowery Hough, Holly Jo King and Donna Baldwin.

The Young Careerist of the Year each year is someone 21 to 35 who has been employed in a business or profession with at least one year or full-time work experience in his or her career field. The Young Careerist lives, works or trains in the area served by the local club, which welcomes members from surrounding areas that do not have one. And the Young Careerist is somebody who supports the goals, objectives and legislative platform of Business and professional Women, USA.
