County will eye 20-year roadmap

Meeting Tuesday, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners is expected discuss, and possibly give final approval to the Wayne County Comprehensive Plan.
The plan, which has been in the works for nearly two years, features 12 vision areas, including transportation, education, housing and neighborhoods, economic development, parks and recreation, community appearance, intergovernmental cooperation and funding.
It was developed by a citizen steering committee and vetted last May in a community forum.
Since then, county department leaders have been working to develop priorities and plans of action for addressing the policies laid out in the document.
It's intended to give the commission a 20-year plan to help direct growth in the county.
Also on the agenda is a discussion of the Wayne County Services on Aging department 2008-2012 plan, which is intended to direct that agency's work for the next four years.
Requiring approval by the commission and by the Area Agency on Aging, it focuses on departmental services, educational and informational programs, department organization and program resources.
Other items to be discussed Tuesday include a resolution requesting the legislature make $135,000 available to the state Department of Transportation for repairs to three Wayne County bridges, and an update on the state of the county's health by Sissy Lee-Elmore, executive director of WATCH.
The meeting will begin at 9 a.m., following an 8 a.m. briefing session.
After a closed session, the commissioners will then travel to the Wayne County Board of Education offices on East Royall Avenue for a joint meeting at 11:30 a.m.
