The Rev. Vernon Tyson, left, father of Tim Tyson and a main character in Tyson’s largely autobiographical novel, “Blood Done Sign My Name,” speaks at the 2008 Wayne County Reads final meeting on the book Monday night at Rebuilding Broken Places. Betty Kemp, second from left, Gene Price and J.D. Evans, along with Carolyn Buffalo and the Rev. Glenwood Burden, both not pictured, were also invited to speak at the meeting to share their remembrances of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Tyson said he did not preach against segregation as a rule. He said his approach was more on the line of “Love thy neighbor.”
