New high schools to hold open houses

The public schools' two newest high schools, Wayne Early/Middle College High and Wayne School of Engineering, are seeking applicants and hosting parents' nights to provide information on their programs.
Incoming freshmen are being sought at the two schools, with representatives visiting several area schools to meet with parents and potential students.

WEMCH is on the Wayne Community College campus. Under the "early college" concept, ninth-graders complete the state's high school graduation requirements and have the opportunity to complete a two-year associate degree or complete a college transfer program that will allow them to transfer as a junior to a four-year university upon graduation from high school, said Lee Johnson, principal.
Parents' nights have already been held at Grantham, Norwayne, Dillard and Mount Olive middle schools. They continue this week, at Rosewood Middle on Tuesday, Eastern Wayne Middle on Tuesday and Spring Creek High on Thursday, followed by Greenwood Middle on Feb. 26 and Brogden Middle on March 4. Each starts at 6 p.m.
The events provide an opportunity for parents and students to learn about the mission and vision of the schools, as well as the curriculum offered, officials said.
"As part of the Wayne School of Engineering core requirements, we will only take rising freshmen who are ready to complete their high school career immersed in science, technology, engineering, and math," explained Gary Hales, principal at the School of Engineering.
Wayne Early/Middle College High School, meanwhile, "is looking for students who are interested in being a part of a non-traditional high school setting, and want to get started on their college career," Mrs. Johnson said, adding, "We are both looking for students interested in being part of a high school with an emphasis on high academic standards, close relationships and innovative teaching styles. We also expect interested students to be responsible and dedicated to the goal before them."
The two schools have also scheduled open houses -- WEMCH will be on Feb. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at Moffatt Auditorium at Wayne Community; and the School of Engineering on March 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. on the Goldsboro High campus.
