Man killed on moped

A 55-year-old Dudley man on a moped was killed after reportedly missing a stop sign at an Emmaus Church Road crossroads Thursday afternoon, the Highway Patrol reported.
Terry Amace Grimes, Delaney Place, Dudley, died on the scene after he apparently failed to stop at the crossroads of Emmaus Church Road and Hazelwood Drive, Patrol Sgt. K.W. Cooke said.
The Brogden area crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. near Outlaw Road, Cooke said.
The sergeant said Grimes' moped was headed west on Hazelwood Drive and a pickup truck driven by Alton Cromartie, 55, was headed south on Emmaus Church Road.
Cromartie drove off the right side of the road trying to avoid hitting Grimes' moped, but was unable to avoid striking it, the sergeant said.
"The moped pulled out in front of him," Cooke said. "(It was) failure to yield on the part of the moped."
Wayne Memorial emergency medical workers responded to the scene and transported Grimes to the hospital for an official declaration of death by doctors, the sergeant said.
Cooke said the initial report of Trooper J.M. Holloman showed no fault on the part of Cromartie.
"No violations at all on Mr. Cromartie," the sergeant said of the Seven Springs area man who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Pickup truck.
Cooke said the Highway Patrol was awaiting toxicology reports from the medical examiner's office to determine whether Grimes was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
"We won't know about alcohol until" those reports are returned, Cooke said.
