Town sells pews for community building

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Town officials are selling the pews in the church serving as the Seven Springs Town Hall to pave the way for a community building.
The current Town Hall is located in the former Seven Springs Baptist Church, which the congregation evacuated for higher ground after the flood of 1999 devastated the town.
Before town officials moved their offices to the church, town business was carried out in a trailer on the hill above town beside the Seven Springs Library. Townspeople complained about the dangers of having to cross N.C. 55 to get to the town board meetings, so officials decided to buy the church property.
After renovations, town business moved back down the hill In 2006.
Town Clerk Karen Linker said the town board members are hoping to have the sanctuary changed into a community center by May 9 and 10, when the Ole Timey Days Festival will be held. The pews vary in size and are going for $100 each or the best offer.
"We'll keep four of the longer ones to put against the walls, and we'll buy tables and make it look like a community building," Ms. Linker said. "And we're working on getting a sound system so we can hold a beauty pageant there."
Miss Seven Springs will be crowned during the pageant. Other Ole Timey Days activities will include a 10 a.m. opening ceremony on May 10 and presentation of the Gladys Potter Community Service Award, a parade at 3:30 p.m., a small car show, antique tractors, a pie and cake baking contest, a Kids Corner with a coloring contest, a candle making demonstration and an Adopt-A-Pet drive. The festival committee is also planning a street dance on Main Street in downtown Seven Springs from 8 until 11 p.m. with a live band and hot dogs.
Ms. Linker said she is also looking for inflatables and some clowns and street performers. Barbecue plates will be sold on May 10 to help raise money for future festivals.
"We're starting early to get a lot of things confirmed, and we're accepting donations," Ms. Linker said. To contribute to the Ole Timey Days Festival, checks can be made payable to the Town of Seven Springs with a memo saying "Ole Timey Days."
