Book describes Quaker influence in Wayne

A former Goldsboro pastor has written a book about 43 Quaker ministers who pastored without pay, several who at one time lived or worked in Wayne County.
Billy Britt, interim superintendent of the N.C. Yearly Meeting of Friends, returns to the area this weekend to sign copies of his book, "Self-Supported Ministers: Lest We Forget." He will be at Contentnea Quarterly Meeting, which will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. Goldsboro Friends Meeting on Guilford Street. He will sign copies of the book at 2:45 p.m. and after the meeting, with a social hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited.
Britt graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1949 and later served as pastor of Rhodes Friends Meeting. His book tells the stories of Quaker ministers who pastored without pay, helping to keep the belief alive in North Carolina in the 1800s and 1900s. Among them were Virgil Pike, Thomas E. Smith and Lola Scott, who all had ties to Wayne County.
Britt currently lives in Greensboro. His book was published by the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends.
