Training for parents of children with challenging behaviors will start next month, through a grant being obtained by Partnership for Children of Wayne County.
Don Magoon, partnership director, said the pilot study will run for 14 weeks, using a nationally recognized model. It will serve between 12 and 16 parents in each group, with three sessions expected to be offered over the next 18 months.
The training will be for parents of children between 2 and 5 years old, with a range of behaviors targeted -- overactive, difficulty paying attention, following directions or making friends.
The "Incredible Years" program is designed to support and strenghten families through play, praise and rewards. Also discussed will be limit setting, communication, handling misbehaviors and preventive approaches.
Target date for the classes to begin will be the week of Feb. 18 running through the week of May 19. A meal and child care will be provided.
Days, times and location of the sessions will be determined. Parents and guardians are invited to contact the partnership office and sign up, indicating preferences of availability.
