Enrollment is up at Wayne Community College for the spring semester, which began Jan. 7, officials announced Friday.

The numbers are up 186 students from the same time last year, with 3,121 students registered for classes.

A portion of the increase may be attributed to the "Learn and Earn" students taking college courses and working toward an associate degree while earning their high school diplomas, said Dr. Kay Albertson, WCC president. The college serves as home to Wayne Early-Middle College High School and the number of students taking Learn and Earn online classes at their own high schools has jumped this semester.

Another jump is anticipated once students register for second eight-week courses on the main campus as well as Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in February.

The college has already exceeded the 3,031 final headcount for spring 2007.
