Wayne County's blood donors have an extra incentive for rolling up their sleeves and giving the gift of life during January and February.
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding its third annual ACC Blood Donor Challenge.
Those giving blood will be entered into a drawing to win an autographed basketball from North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or Duke University, according to Tammy Forrester, blood services director.
The drawing for the basketballs will be held in early March.
"We do this to encourage our donors," Mrs. Forrester said. "Our donors are so giving of themselves. They come out and for free, give the gift of life. This is a great opportunity to give back to them."
Mrs. Forrester said the ACC Blood Donor Challenge is one of the chapter's most popular campaigns. "Donors will call us wanting to know when it starts and when it's over," she said.
Since a person can give blood only every 56 days, each donor will have just one chance to win a basketball of his choice.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health.
