MOC announces speaker for Martin Luther King celebration on Thursday

Eddie Wayne Lawrence, the former executive director of the N.C. Human Relations Commission, will be the featured speaker at Wayne Community College's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Thursday.

He will speak at 1 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium. The public is invited to the free event, as well as the annual Soul Food Festival, scheduled to follow in the cafeteria. There is a $2 charge for the food-tasting.

Lawrence, pastor of Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton and Greater Grace Cathedral in Rocky Mount, is also a real estate broker in Rocky Mount. His role as a leader and advocate for human rights began at Northern Nash High School, where he was student body president and a founder of the Black Awareness Club. As executive director of the Human Relations Commis-sion from 1995 to 2003, he also provided oversight for the state Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission.
