Mount Olive College will collect items, create care packages, and send them to airmen from Seymour Johnson Air Force who are stationed overseas. The college has joined with Capt. Ted Janicki of the 916th Air Refueling Wing at the base, who is also an assistant professor of computer information systems, to create the program.

Community members are encouraged to contribute items. They may be donated to the Student Development Office in the Murphy Regional Center on campus. All items must be received no later than Friday, Feb. 22. For more information , contact Julie Beck at 658-7880 or at jbeck@moc.edu.

The care package idea was initiated when Mount Olive College agreed to host the 12th annual Leadership-Enrichment-Achievement-Development (L.E.A.D.) conference, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23. About 200 college students from across the state will converge on campus to attend leadership workshops and hear Nancy Hunter Denney, a national motivational speaker, present a keynote speech. This conference, sponsored by the North Carolina College Personnel Association, requires the host college to sponsor a service project.

"Choosing a project that focused on our SJAFB troops was our first choice," Beck, the director of student activities and co-chairperson of the L.E.A.D. conference, said.

Items needed include white athletic socks, beanie caps in dark colors, brown, tan, black or green T-shirts, candy, power bars, deodorant, body wash, hand sanitizer, nail clippers, lip balm, tooth brushes, tooth paste, razors, shaving gel, flashlights, Wiley-X or ESS eyewear, 5.11 brand socks and 5.11 tactical shirts and pants.
