A fifth-grade mathematics teacher at Spring Creek Elementary School has been named Wayne County Public Schools' outstanding elementary math teacher of the year.

Amy Janning, a 19-year veteran teacher, was recognized Monday night during the school board meeting. She had earlier been honored at a breakfast sponsored by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics during the 2007 Math Conference held in Greensboro.

As part of her recognition, she will receive a one-year membership in the NCCTM and a personalized award.

Mrs. Janning is currently working toward a graduate degree in mathematics education at East Carolina University. Last year, she was named regional lead teacher for the state's PIMS grant and presented workshops to lead teachers throughout the state.

Locally, she has headed up staff development for elementary math teachers during early dismissal days.

At her school earlier this year, she held a family math night, organizing activities for students and parents to better understand the concepts being taught in her classroom. She has also created math games and geometry activities to motivate her students to excel in the subject.
