A Clayton woman died from injuries sustained in an accident about 3 p.m. Monday on U.S. 117 South near the Down East Travel Center.
A spokesman at Pitt Memorial Hospital confirmed this morning that Starr Ann Burnette died after being involved in an accident involving her Pontiac Firebird and an 18-wheeler that was entering the highway.
Detailed information from the state Highway Patrol was unavailable today, but bystanders said the Burnette car struck the tractor-trailer as it was turning northbound from a side street.
Firefighters from the Mar-Mac Volunteer Fire Department and Goldsboro Station One used power tools to extricate the victim, who was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital before being taken by helicopter to Pitt.
According to state troopers at the scene, the car was heading north on U.S. 117 Bypass when it failed to stop for a stoplight and struck the tractor-trailer owned by D.T. Grantham.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The impact of the collision sent the Pontiac down into the median between the north- and south-bound lanes, flipping it over several times.
