A Smithfield bank just off the U.S. 70 Bypass on U.S. 301 was robbed by a lone man Wednesday morning, authorities there said.

A black man described as about 6-feet tall, heavyset, wearing dark clothing entered the Heritage Bank around 11 a.m., Lt. R.K. Powell said.

The 30- to 40-year-old suspect did not brandish a gun or other weapon, but made the bank's occupants believe he had one, the lieutenant said.

Smithfield police are seeking this man in connection with a Wednesday robbery.

"(The suspect) presented the teller with a note demanding money," Powell said. "No weapon was shown, only implied, and he fled the scene on foot."

The suspect was given an undetermined amount of cash, which he stuffed in a bag before escaping capture, the lieutenant said.

Smithfield police ask people with information to call 919-934-2121.

The lieutenant said video surveillance of the crime provides a clear picture of the suspect as he committed the crime.

"It is a real good picture," Powell said.
