All city, county, state and federal offices will be closed New Year's Day and revelers planning a big night tonight should plan ahead and have a designated driver in place because law enforcement officials say they will be out in force to watch for drunken drivers.
"We will have all available troopers working and people should adhere to the rules of the road," Sgt. Jerry Burton of the Highway Patrol said this morning. "If you must drink, have a designated driver."
Local banks and many other businesses also will be closed in observance of the holiday.
The county landfill will be closed, as will all convenience centers.
Waste collection for the city of Goldsboro scheduled for New Year's Day will be handled on Jan. 2.
Waste Industries will operate on the same schedule as it did at Christmas, with collections normally scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday handled on a one-day delay. The schedule will return to normal on Friday.
Wayne County public schools will reopen Wednesday.
