The Greene Central Marching Band will be participating in the National Outback Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida over the New Year's holiday. The band was invited to participate after winning a competition in Havelock in November 2006. A total of 17 high school bands from across the country competed. Greene Central will be the only band from North Carolina.
The 68-member band will depart for Florida on Saturday, Dec. 29. The field competition will be held on Dec. 30. The Marching Rams will perform "A Tribute to Chuck Mangione" and will include the songs "Children of Sanchez," "Land of Make Believe," "Echano," and "El Gato Triste."
There will be an Outback Parade on Dec. 31 in which the bands will also be judged.
On New Year's Day, the Marching Rams will participate with all the other marching bands in the halftime field performance.
The game starts at 11 a.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
Band boosters held several fundraisers to come up with the approximately $30,000 needed to pay for the trip.
