Pickle drop will benefit food bank

MOUNT OLIVE — Mt. Olive Pickle Co. will team up with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina during the company’s 2007 New Year’s Eve Pickle Drop.
People attending the ninth annual event this year are asked to bring at least two canned food items for the Food Bank. In exchange, they will receive a chance to win door prizes from the Mt. Olive Pickle gift shop. The grand prize is a pickle similar to the one that is used to usher in the New Year.
The New Year’s Eve Pickle Drop will be held Dec. 31 at the Corner of Cucumber and Vine streets at the company’s site. The festivities start at 6 p.m., and the New Year’s Eve pickle descends down the company flagpole at the stroke of 7 p.m., which is midnight Greenwich Mean Time.
Company officials are asking the community to remember the Food Bank as they make plans to attend the event. The Food Bank recently announced that it is facing a significant shortfall in fresh produce, a result of this year’s drought. At the same time, Food Bank’s local partner agencies are experiencing a 20-30 percent increase in the number of people being served.
Food Bank items most needed include (no glass and pop-top cans are a plus):
• Canned meals, like stews, soups, tuna and ravioli.
• Canned fruits and vegetables
• Rice
• Cereal
• Paper products: toilet paper, paper towels, etc.
• Hygiene items: toothpaste, shaving items, soap, etc.
• Diapers
• Infant Formula
No loose glass and plastic jars of baby food can be accepted. They will have to be discarded due to health regulations.
