Walnut Creek Council discusses lake levels, names lake committee, planners

The Village of Walnut Creek Council accepted a parcel of land across from the Town Hall at its meeting Tuesday night, but held off on purchasing a second tract located near one of the village's wells. The council is considering buying the second tract as a backup well site but council members said they wanted to discuss the issue further before taking action. The cost of the land is about $30,000.
In other business, the village received a financial report from accountant Michael Jordan of Pittard, Perry & Crone for the past financial year.
And council members agreed to switch the job of tax collector from village Clerk Cathy Woodson to village Administrator Lou Cook.
Council member also discussed the current water shortage and its effects on residents. Cook told council members that he had drafted water use restrictions based on the ordinance adopted by the city of Goldsboro and would have it ready for the council to consider at its January meeting.
Mayor Pro-tem Danny Jackson brought up the issue to council of dropping the level of Lake Wackena this year. Jackson said the lake committee wants to keep the lake at its current level, "not knowing if we're going to get enough rain to bring it back up if we drop it."
The lake is usually dropped for two reasons -- to repair retaining walls and boat slips and to control aquatic weed growth. Cook said no residents had requested repairs and the council agreed not to drop the lake level. The new Lake Committee will be made up of Jim Clough, Taylor Jeffries, Sam Korschun, Neil Dupuy and Tommy Wiggins.
Also, the council chose the planning board for the new year: Mike Daley, David Sloan, John Welsh, Woody Woodson, Nona Andrews, Craig Bowen and Jeff Wharton.
