Jackson and Sons gift boosts HVAC/R program at college

Jackson & Sons Heating & Air Conditioning and Trane have donated a heating and air conditioning system to Wayne Community College that will be used to train students in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) program.
The unit has been rated for its "super efficiency" technology and installed would be worth $6,000, said Ron Carter, service manager for Jackson & Sons.
Carter is also a product of the WCC program and now serves on its advisory committee. Three of his former employees are currently taking evening classes.
The college has long enjoyed an affiliation with Jackson and Sons, said instructor J.E. Bass. In addition to providing equipment, parts and supplies, the local heating and air conditioning company provides two scholarships each year for students seeking careers in the industry and has hired many of the college's graduates.
Wayne Community offers a two-semester HVAC/R program as well as continuing education courses. Upon completion, the job prospects for students are good, Bass said.
"We're training them for a job that will never be exported or computerized away," he said. "For 10-15 years, each new unit will have to be maintained and then it will have to be replaced."
