A Princeton area man died early Sunday after being hit by a car on U.S. 70 near the intersection of U.S. 117, Goldsboro police investigators said.

Jesse Metcalf Simpson, 25, of U.S. 70 West, died after impact with a 2003 Nissan driven by David Daniels of Forest Hills Drive, Four Oaks.

Daniels' vehicle was traveling west down the center lane of U.S. 70 just past the U.S. 117 intersection at 3:27 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

Daniels had consumed alcohol, but was well under the legal limit at .03 percent blood alcohol content, and police said no charges are expected to be filed against him.

Patrol Major Michael Hopper said it wasn't clear why Simpson was walking in the roadway, but it was not the first time police had found him there.

A sergeant with the department told Hopper that he had administered a warning to Simpson just a few weeks prior to the accident about walking in the roadway, Hopper said.

It was not clear if Simpson had been drinking, and police will have to wait a few weeks to know for sure, Hopper said.

"We won't know until we get the toxicology report back," Hopper said.
