A Goldsboro man was found with a gunshot wound to the head on East Maple Street on Monday night, police said.
Ricky Lee Burch, 33, of McLain Street, was found in the 1700 block of East Maple after police received an emergency call at 7:39 p.m., according to an investigator's report.
Burch was in the roadway when Officer J.R. Holland found him, the report said.
Police Maj. Jeff Stewart said there was little that police could release to the public at this point, other than that the incident was under investigation.
"He's in the hospital. There's not a whole lot else I can tell you," Stewart said.
Police suspected the weapon used was a handgun, according to the report.
Burch's mother Rosa Holder said this morning that she had "no idea" why her son had been involved in the violent incident.
"I sure don't know. He was just splendid and kind as he could be, and then he's out there lying in the street," Mrs. Holder said.
The victim's mother said that doctors at Wayne Memorial Hospital told her if Burch lives, his injuries will likely debilitate him forever.
"(The injuries are) bad, bad. They said he won't be able ... he won't be the same no more. He won't be any good."
A Wayne Memorial Hospital spokesman said Burch was in stable condition today, but remained in the hospital's intensive care unit.
