Potter stays mayor in Seven Springs; incumbents win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Stephen Potter beat a challenger for the mayor's seat in Seven Springs by four votes Tuesday in the municipal election, and the three incumbent town commissioners kept their seats.
Potter was appointed acting mayor after Jewel Kilpatrick resigned in January.
On Tuesday, Potter received 20 votes to Karen Mozingo's 16.
There are no hard feelings, said Mrs. Mozingo, whose husband, Bobby, was elected Tuesday to a full term on the board. He had been serving out the term vacated by Elizabeth Quinn.
Mrs. Mozingo said she was not disappointed in the result.
"I wish (Potter) good luck," she said.
Potter said he appreciates the people who voted for him.
"I'm looking forward to the next two years," he said. "My main goal has been to get a hold on where we were financially, because we had been gong into the fund balance each year. We need to maintain our diligence on that."
He said the town board needs to work on ways to generate interest in the town, such as the annual Ole Timey Days Festival.
Bobby Mozingo said he was pleased that more people than usual came out to vote.
"I heard 50 percent (of the registered voters in Seven Springs) turned out," he said. "I think we'll all work together. We all have our ideas we'd like to see put into place, and it's time to put our heads together and move forward with our ideas. I love Seven Springs. It's a good town."
Although the mayor's seat has a two-year term, the town commissioners in Seven Springs serve four years.
Danny Carter was the only incumbent in the race. The other two were appointed.
This was the second time Carter was elected to a four-year term on the board.
"I'm pleased with the outcome of the election for everyone, and I look forward to the next four years serving our great community," said Carter.
The third commissioner, Alan Cash, was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Potter when he took over as acting mayor in January.
"I thank the voters of Seven Springs," Cash said. "I hope we can make Seven Springs bigger and better in the future."
