A Wayne County Sheriff's deputy hit a cow in his personal vehicle on Stevens Mill Road early Thursday morning, a state trooper said.

Deputy Mike Biggins was headed to his job as a security officer at Wayne Memorial Hospital around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday when he hit the bovine obstacle, Trooper J.L. Graham said.

Biggins was not injured, but the cow was killed, the trooper said.

"He (Biggins) was heading east on Stevens Mill Road, headed into Goldsboro," Graham said. "He said he was just going on, and there she was out of nowhere."

The 7-year-old, approximately 1,700-pound cow had escaped from a Department of Agriculture facility on Stevens Mill Road, the trooper said, and was standing in the eastbound travel lane.

""I talked with a gentleman from the Department of Agriculture over there, at the time they didn't know how he got out," Graham said.

Biggins' 2004 Toyota pickup truck, was totaled, causing about $13,000 in damage, the trooper said.

"(The cow) hit the hood, and rolled down the left side of the passenger vehicle as well, so there was damage to the passenger side as well," Graham said.

No charges were filed.
