FREMONT -- Law enforcement officers have arrested four men on drug charges, with three charged after a raid Tuesday at 108 W. Mill St.

Investigators said the house had been under surveillance.

Fremont police Chief Ron Rawlings said his officers and officers with the Wayne County-Golds-boro Drug Squad had been sharing information about alleged illegal activities in the vicinity.

Rawlings and Sheriff's Office Maj. George Rae-cher said Ramon Abdul Simon Grandy, 28, of Dock Street, Fre-mont, was jailed Monday under a $3,000 bond after being charged with possession of crack cocaine and driving while license revoked.

That arrest led to Tuesday's raid, in which Kenneth Ray Spruill Jr., 17, of West Mill Street; Alvin Jammal Elliot, 20, of Dickerson Street; and Christopher Jay Chavis, 56, of Mill Street were charged.

The three men were charged with possession of marijuana. Elliot and Spruill were held under $5,000 bonds while Chavis was released on a written promise to appear, according to a news release.

Rawlings said surveillance of the home led him to believe "they're dealing with a lot of weight over here."

Raecher said this raid, like a recent one in Mount Olive, illustrates a continuing effort by the Sheriff's Office and the drug squad to help municipal police in Wayne County.

"This is another situation where Chief Rawlings has asked the Sheriff's Office and the Drug Squad to assist them with their drug problems," Raecher said.

"This is a result of one investigation, and it's like the Mount Olive case. We're going to assist the outlying small jurisdictions with their drug problems."
