A Clayton man told police he drove all the way home from Goldsboro before realizing he suffered a serious stab wound at a North William street convenience store, an investigator says.

Gary Devon Dudley, of South Moore Street, Clayton reported the stabbing from WakeMed hospital early Tuesday morning after being stabbed after 10 p.m. on Monday night, police said.

There are no suspects yet, Goldsboro Police Investigator Dwayne Dean said.

Dudley reported a black man in a black hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans approached him with the hood over his head and asked for money at In and Out Convenience Store in the 1000 block of North William, Dean said.

"From what I'm gathering, he (Dudley) pulled out his money to give the suspect a dollar," Dean said.

Dean said he would not call Dudley's stack of cash "a wad of money," but the suspect observed Dudley flipping through larger bills to get to a smaller denomination.

The suspect took the opportunity to take all of Dudley's money and then stabbed the Clayton man in the stomach, police said.

"He was flipping through his big bills to get down to his smaller bills," Dean said. "He (the suspect) decided to take the whole thing that he had in his hand."

The type of weapon used is unknown to investigators at this time, Dean said.

"He doesn't know" what he was stabbed with, Dean said. "He just knows it was something shiny."

After the suspect stabbed Dudley in the stomach, he ran in the direction of nearby PET Dairy on North William Street, the investigator said.

Dean said Dudley got in his vehicle after the incident and drove home.

"He didn't know it was that serious until he got back to his house in Clayton," Dean said.

The investigator said the Clayton man was still being treated at WakeMed Tuesday morning. Dean said when Dudley leaves the hospital, he will work with police to try to determine who is assailant was.
