Warsaw prepares for parade

Organizers are gearing up for Warsaw's 87th consecutive Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 10.
The day's events will kick off with a memorial service at 10 a.m. in Veterans Park, with the parade scheduled to follow at 11 a.m.
The parade marshal will be Col. Dr. Stephen W. Higgins, commander of the 4th Fighter Wing Medical Group. The parade this year is honoring the U.S. Air Force. Its motto is "Service before self."
Applications for other participants are currently being accepted.
School, clubs, bands, civic organizations, churches, businesses and individuals are all urged to sign up for both the parade and the rest of the day's festivities.
All entries must have a patriotic motif and all signs must be stenciled in red, white and blue.
The deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 23, and a $10 entry fee is required. Exceptions are car and motorcyclist clubs, which are $40, and horse clubs, which are by invitation only and also are $40. Additionally, only 25 individual horses will be allowed and their entry fee will be $25.
Applications also are being accepted for vendor spaces on the two blocks of Front Street.
Those entry fees are $40 non-food and $50 for those serving food.
Vendors can open about 9 a.m. and most will be out until about 3 p.m.
In addition, said organizer Linda Kitchin, "The Best House, on Hill Street, will be open for people to go in and see the Duplin Veterans Museum if they like."
Entertainment also will be provided.

"We hope to have a good crowd for it. We usually do. The military will be well-represented," she said.
