MOC lunch-and-learn series aims to help gardeners, landscapers

The Lois G. Britt Agribusiness Center at Mount Olive College is sponsoring a lunch-and-learn series as an outreach to the surrounding community.
Entitled "Growing to Serve You," Dr. Sandra Maddox, associate director of the business center, said, "The series will provide timely educational information on a number of topics important to homeowners, community gardeners, landscape and maintenance personnel, and anyone wanting to learn more about landscaping and plant care. Whether you have a green thumb or not, the series is for you."
Having a good working knowledge of plants is important, she said.
"A well maintained landscape adds value to a home," she said, adding that, "With current drought conditions plaguing the state, proper plant selection and care can make the difference between an attractive low maintenance landscape or a hefty plant replacement bill."
Offered on the third Thursday of the month from October through March 2008, the series will cover such topics as Ornamental Grasses for the Landscape; Planting Spring Flowering Bulbs; Winter Color in the Landscape; Houseplant Care; Growing Roses and Container Gardening.
The 45-minute presentations will take place in the Hennessee Room of the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center from noon to 12:45 p.m. Leading the discussions will be Jessica Hyatt, horticulture extension agent with the NC Cooperative Extension Service.
Students, faculty, staff and the public are all invited to attend any or all of the free sessions. Participants may bring a bag lunch or purchase lunch in the college cafeteria. Parking is also accessible.
