For the past 21 years, churches, civic groups and other organizations have taken part in helping the local Salvation Army's Women's Auxiliary with its Christmas Stocking Project.

And the auxiliary is once again calling on Wayne area residents to help.

The stockings are intended to brighten the holiday for needy children.

They are 24 inches long, made of red mesh netting and are tagged by age and sex to facilitate in filling them with the proper gifts.

Written instructions are attached to each stocking.

As in years past, Salvation Army officials say the age group most in need is 9-12, both boys and girls.

The stockings will be ready for pickup on Oct. 24. They need to be filled and returned to the Salvation Army no later than Dec. 5.

Because of the increased need, donors are asked to consider filling as many stockings as possible.

Any individual or group that would like to help is asked to call The Salvation Army office at 735-4811 and press 0 for the receptionist.
