Police warn of scam
Goldsboro police say they're investigating a check cashing scam affecting several city residents. The scam involves someone mailing the victim a check or money order for a substantial amount of money, usually $980, police said. The victim is instructed to send money to the non-existent company "Quality Consumer Research" to allow them to cash the $980 check, police said. When the victim tries to cash the check, they discover the check is fraudulent, police said.
Wedding dress stolen
Sheawanna Michell Brown-Byrd won't have a wedding keepsake after she moved out of a home in the 600 block of Devereaux Street, police report. Mrs. Brown-Byrd told police someone entered the home and took her wedding dress, valued at $2,000.
Break-in
Wendell Gentry of TelAid on U.S. 70 West reported that someone broke into the building, cut down and stole eight flat-screen security monitors, valued at a total $464. A glass pane had been removed from an adjacent store entryway and the security thieves may have entered TelAid that way, police said.
