EWHS student injured after gun goes off

A 14-year-old Eastern Wayne High School student was shot in the arm today after he tripped in a ditch on an early morning hunting trip, authorities said.
A shotgun round took "a pretty good chunk" out of Jonathan Carter's left arm, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, Wayne County Sheriff's Captain Tom Effler said.
Jonathan was out with his brother, Joshua, 23, for an early morning goose hunting trip before school, Sheriff Carey Winders said.
The sheriff's captain said the call came in around 6:45 a.m.
Effler said the boys were walking down a ditch on Truevine Road near Rodell Barrow Road in the Saulston area off U.S. 13 North.
"They were actually doing pretty good. They were walking down a ditch. They weren't crossing a ditch," Effler said.
That's when Jonathan tripped over something, and when he fell the gun "went down and hit him in the left arm" and the shotgun fired, he said.
The captain said he expected the boy to be transferred to Duke University Hospital in Durham.
