Chili cookoff to benefit soup kitchen

A chili cookoff, the Really Chili Challege, will be held Sept. 29 to raise money to help the Community Soup Kitchen. The competition will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the site of the Center Street Jams in downtown Goldsboro.

Prizes for best chili (first, second and third place), Best Chili Name, Best Decorated Booth and Best Team Name will be given away.

Rules are as follows:

*Chili must be made from scratch on site.

*Meat can be browned ahead and brought to the site.

*No store-bought chili mixes may be used.

*Beans, rice, pasta, crackers, or whatever you use with your chili, may be canned, cooked or packaged.

*Each team must prepare five gallons or more of its chili.

Teams will meet at 8 a.m. for final instructions and set-up. Judging and entry of the public will start at 11.

A 12-by-12-foot space, a table, sampling cups and utensils will be provided for each team. All other equipment (cooking stoves, booths or tents, etc.) will be the responsibility of the team

Electricity will not be available.

The Really Chili Challenge will be held rain or shine

All judges' decisions will be final.

The entry fee of $50 per team includes one Really Chili Challenge apron. Additional aprons, T-shirts and hats are available for purchase.
