A Goldsboro police officer resigned from the department Thursday after being accused of assault in Lenoir County, the police chief said.
Officer Rusty Ray Herring had been a police officer with Goldsboro police for 31/2 years, Chief Tim Bell said.
The chief said Herring resigned on Thursday.
Herring faces two counts of simple assault and a breaking and entering charge in Lenoir County.
County employee Jason Milton Gray, an emergency medical technician, was also charged in the incident. County Human Resources Director Sue Guy said Gray also handed in his resignation Thursday morning. Gray joined the county in 2002.
