Students Honored for Hospital Work

Junior volunteers at Wayne Memorial Hospital were recognized for their service over the summer recently, with three given special awards.
Donna Archer, director of volunteer services, said this year's group of high school students was among the best and brightest.
"They were very well-behaved, polite, conscientious and dedicated," she aid. "The future is bright for these young men and women."
Sixteen departments at the hospital were served by the 39 volunteers this summer, Mrs. Archer said. They worked 1,960 hours --500 m ore than the previous year-- during the eight-week program.
Most junior volunteers had two assignments, one clinical and one clerical, she said. In the clinical area, their range of duties included making beds, refilling water pitchers and responding to call bells. In the clerical assignment, they copied, filed, answered phones and handled office work.
The junior volunteer service excellence awards went to Stephanie Worley and Laquan Reid.
Stephanie, a junior at Southern Wayne High School, is in her second year as a volunteer at the hospital. This summer, she worked in admitting and the pediatrics unit.
Laquan, a sophomore at Charles B. Aycock High School, was assigned to day surgery and oncology.
The 2007 outstanding junior volunteer award went to Rashonda Hicks, a junior at Aycock who worked in day surgery and the laundry.
