Deputy crashes during chase

A high-speed chase Monday night ended in the arrest of a Kinston area man and minor injuries for a Wayne County Sheriff's deputy who helped join in the pursuit.
The Wayne Sheriff's Office charged Jarvis Enrico Adams of Georgetown Road, Kinston, with speeding 73 mph in a 55 mph zone and fleeing to elude arrest.
Sheriff's Lt. Steve Mozingo tried to stop Adams on N.C. 55 near Seven Springs at about 10:20 p.m. Monday for speeding, but Adams refused to stop and the chase began.
Assisting Mozingo were units from the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office and the state Highway Patrol.
Wayne County Deputy Brian Leonard was responding as backup for Mozingo when he lost control of his patrol car and ran off the highway near its intersection with N.C. 403. The patrol car was a total loss.
Leonard was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The chase ended inside the Kinston city limits after Adams rammed his vehicle into the side of a Lenoir County Sheriff's patrol car.
The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office charged Adams with felony fleeing, careless and reckless driving, resisting arrest, damage to county property and assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer.
This morning, Adams was being held in the Lenoir County Jail under $7,000 bond on the Lenoir County charges.
